Antico Santuario Nostra Signora delle Grazie
Via Delle Grazie Nuoro
The Old Church of Our Lady of Grace (Vecchia Chiesa delle Grazie) is located in the heart of Nuoro. Also known as the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, it stands as an important example of the city’s local architectural heritage.
Built in the late 17th century, it is one of the oldest religious buildings in Nuoro still open to visitors. The church is located in the historic Seuna district, and according to local legend, the discovery of a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary miraculously saved the city from a devastating plague. Following this event, a vow was made to the Virgin, and since 1812, the people of Nuoro have kept this promise by holding an annual festival on November 21st , a deeply rooted tradition celebrated throughout central Sardinia.
The facade features an elegant portal and stone decorations reminiscent of Romanesque art. A tall, slender bell tower rises gracefully beside it. Inside, the church is simple yet captivating, with altars dedicated to saints and frescoes depicting episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary.
The Old Church of Our Lady of Grace is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Nuoro’s cultural identity.
Visiting this church offers a journey into the history and spirituality of Sardinia, revealing the traditions that continue to shape the daily life of the Nuorese community.
