The museum is housed in one of the most important 19th century buildings in the city of Nuoro.
This neoclassical building, once the residence of the renowned Sardinian intellectual and politician Giorgio Asproni, opens onto a large garden that serves as the museum's main entrance.

Opened in 2002, the museum offers a vivid testimony to the rich paleontological and archaeological heritage of the Nuoro province.
It tells the story of the Barbagia and Ogliastra territories, from their origins through to the medieval period.

A significant portion of the collection relates to the Nuragic age. The exhibition has a strong educational focus, featuring reconstructions of key monuments - such as Sa Sedda 'e sos Carros in Oliena - where many of the displayed artifacts were discovered.
The museum also houses a collection of bronze figurines, which ranks among the most important artistic expressions of the Mediterranean for this historical period.
